Relentless
From Good to Great to Unstoppable
Relentless delves into the brains of some of the world's most successful and talented sportsmen, including Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwyane Wade. These athletes' mindsets and work ethics, according to Tim Grover, make them unstoppable.
In real life, being relentless is a mindset that may help you succeed, endure, conquer, and be strong even when others aren't.
You flourish under pressure if you keep going when everyone else is given up. You must never allow your emotions to make you weak; else, you will become invincible.
Grover lays down 13 criteria for living a life of resilience.
This book is about discovering what you can do, getting results you never imagined, reaching the highest level of success, and then going even higher. - Kobe Bryant
Coolers, Closers, Cleaners: Good, Great, Unstoppable
Grover describes a three-tiered classification system for people: Coolers, Closers, and Cleaners.
Coolers
A Cooler is a cautious person. You receive the intended outcome when you offer a work to a Cooler. That's all there is to it. When things are going well, they can bear a certain amount of strain, but when things get too severe, they pass the problem on to someone else. They are not decision-makers, but rather mediators.
Closers
A Closer is capable of enduring a great deal of strain. He has the potential to provide good results on a regular basis. He wants to be noticed and credited for his work. He is well aware of what other people are saying and thinking about him. Closer is a great competitor, but he prefers financial security above winning or success.
Cleaners
A Cleaner is never content. He is constantly at the top of his game and consistently produces excellent outcomes. Cleaners are the epitome of tenacity. When they attain their own best, they set new goals for themselves. They never seem to settle down.
Cooler, closer, cleaner...good, great, unstoppable. You have the freedom to be anyone you wish. If you want to be unstoppable, you must commit.
The Relentless 13
There are 13 core traits of a 'Relentless' mindset:
1 – When everyone else has had enough, you keep pushing harder.
2 – You enter the zone, turn off everything, and control the uncontrolled.
3 – You're well aware of who you are.
4 – You've got a dark side that won't let you be good.
5 – You thrive under pressure, especially when it comes to greater stakes.
6 – When others struggle, they look to you implicitly.
7 – You don't compete with anybody; instead, you attack your adversary.
8 – When others ask inquiries or give suggestions, you make decisions.
9 – You don't have to enjoy your work in order to be hooked to the outcomes.
10 – You like to be feared rather than loved.
11 – You don't have faith in people. You have faith in yourself.
12 – You don't see failure because you always have a response.
13 – You don't celebrate on your accomplishments because you desire more.
You keep pushing yourself harder when everyone has had enough
Every day, you have to do something you don't want to do. You must step outside of your comfort zone. Push through indifference, sloth, and fear by challenging yourself to be uncomfortable. If you want to achieve any type of success, you must be at ease with being uncomfortable.
You must push yourself beyond your predetermined boundaries. You must broaden your horizons. It's better if you can teach your mind to train your body. Physical domination may help you achieve greatness. Mental dominance is what makes you invincible in the end.
Coolers won't put you in a role with which they aren't comfortable.
Closers only take on the position when they are asked to.
Cleaners are the ones who do it. They don't take their time to get used to the scenario.
Do. The. Work.
You get into the zone, shut out everything & control the uncontrollable.
A zone is a location where there is no fear, no intrusion, and simply concentration and focus. There is no thinking involved since thinking diverts attention away from the activity at hand. When you're in the zone, it doesn't matter what's going on around you. You're entirely cut off from the rest of the world.
Cleaners have a calm and steady demeanour. Nothing - personal, business, or otherwise - can touch them when they are in the zone until they are ready to return.
Make a pattern that isn't too different. Do what you do every day and don't be concerned about your surroundings or conditions. For you, everything remains the same.
You know exactly who you are
In the bush, a lion is on the loose. He strikes and kills at will . He acts based on his gut impulses. Put him in a zoo cage, and he wpuld spend the entire day lying around doing nothing.
We are born relentless, much like the lion in the wild. However, as we get older, cultural standards and limits around us. We lose our desire like the lion in the cage.
The majority of individuals stick to the lines and follow the road that everyone else is taking. Cleaners, on the other hand, learn to set boundaries, restrictions, and uncertainties aside. They stop thinking and begin to discover more about themselves. They have faith in what they know. They follow their instincts and act without hesitation; they don't have to think about it.
Those killing impulses are still alive and well someplace deep within us. They are awaiting for their release. So, follow your gut impulses and act. The distinction between coolers, closers, and cleansers is this.
Closers take the shot only when they feel they have a strong chance. Coolers avoid taking the shot. Cleaners take the initiative and make it happen.
You have a dark that refuses to be taught good
There's an irrefutable force pushing your acts deep within you, a part of you that refuses to be ordinary, a piece that refuses to be tamed. It's not merely a case of killer instinct.
You're struggling with your dark side when you're torn between what you want and what you know is correct. You may fight it all you want, but you'll never win. That is the distinction between coolers, closers, and cleansers. Coolers lose when they strive to battle their evil side. Closers are aware of their evil side, but they are powerless to control it. Cleaners, on the other hand, channel their evil side into raw, controlled force.
External stimuli have no effect on cleaners. They lose all inhibitions and don't give a damn what other people think of them. They are fearless and allow themselves to accomplish whatever they need to do. They are able to control their evil side and act on instinct.
You are not intimidated by pressure; you thrive on it
There is no such thing as a clutch gene, according to Grover. "Clutch" refers to someone who just steps up at the last minute.
Not everyone is capable of dealing with stress and crisis circumstances. A cleaner is always willing to help. A Cleaner puts pressure on himself to do well all of the time, not only when he's in a pinch. Every scenario is a test of willpower. They thrive in high-stress circumstances. They use stress to push themselves out of their comfort zones and achieve better.
External pressure is never applied to cleaners. They can only feel the strain from within, so no one else can add to what they've already endured. They keep their emotions in check and conserve their energy for performance.
When everyone is hitting the “In case of emergency” button, they're all looking for you
There is a distinction to be made between confidence and arrogance. Confidence entails trusting in your talents but also recognising when something isn't working and being able to alter and adapt to the circumstance. When someone is cocky, they make the same error over and over again because they are unable to accept their faults.
Cleaners are confident in their abilities. When they make a mistake, they own up to it. They own it if they did it. They are confident in their abilities to deal with any scenario. They let go of their doubts and fears. Instead, they put in long hours and plan ahead. They train their reflexes so that they can react fast to any situation.
You don't compete with anyone; you simply attack your opponent
The goal in life is to maximise our strengths while compensating for our weaknesses. Successful individuals compensate for what they lack; failed ones create excuses, blame others, and never overcome their shortcomings.
Cleaners are the ones in charge. They concentrate on the strengths and flaws of individuals. Their objective is to bring everyone else down to their level; they are not lowering themselves. They understand that the greatest approach to motivate people to improve is to place them in positions where they can actually flourish. They don't have to compete with anybody else. Others are forced to compete with themselves as a result of their actions.
The only way to set other people on fire is to be set on fire from within.
You make decisions; not suggestions. You know the answers while everyone else is still asking questions
All of your plans are pointless unless you start putting them into action. The majority of individuals offer proposals and then wait to hear what others have to say about them. Cleaners, on the other hand, opt to operate while others wait around unsure of what to do. They devise a strategy that matches their aims and interests, which they subsequently put into action.
Don't attempt to be all things to all people. When things get rough, don't give up. Figure out what you want to accomplish, then go ahead and do it. And do it better than the competition. For becoming an expert at one thing, people get paid a lot. More time is spent working by the most creative and successful people than by anybody else.
You don't have to love the work, but you are addicted to the results
When your talents are poor, it's easier to improve. When you're at the top of your game, it's difficult to improve. You must put forth a lot of effort and make sacrifices. There is no such thing as luck or shortcuts. You know you're doing something great when your competitors complain about how lucky you were.
Working hard is not a skill. It's something that everybody can do. However, only a few people are capable of finishing what they begin. Only those who are truly relentless are able to keep pushing the objective. For a winner, there is no off-season..
The majority of individuals prefer to take the elevator rather than the stairs. People abandon exercises and diets because they are too difficult to follow. Cleaners aren't concerned with immediate satisfaction; instead, they focus on the long-term benefits.
You'd rather be feared than liked
Fear and respect: your actions, not your words or feelings, should let them know you were there. To be the centre of attention, you don't have to be loud. Cleaners use silence to frighten their opponents. Others admire their capacity to execute their next move because they make others dread it.
Cleaners are unconcerned about fitting in. They'd rather be hated or despised than liked or respected. They concentrate on the end goal, which earns them the respect they deserve.
You trust very few people, and those you trust better never let you down
You won't be able to improve things unless you stop making them worse. Obtaining perfection entails searching out and embracing the truth, as well as making required adjustments. As a result, it's better to associate with individuals who aspire to be successful, pursue their aspirations, and achieve their goals. Those individuals are aware of what it takes to be successful. If you hang out with folks who have lost faith and aren't pursuing their dreams, they will tell you that it's not worth it since it requires sacrifices.
Cleaners are surrounded by people that want you to succeed and understand what it takes to be successful.
You don't recognize failure; you know there's more than one way to get what you want
When you decide you've failed, that's when you've failed. Until then, you're still seeking for methods to reach where you want to go. If anything doesn't go according to plan, take note of it, shift course, and adapt. It is a show of weakness if you do not adjust to the situation. Recognize when it's time to change gears and go in a new direction.
Making money isn't the only measure of success. Doing things that no one else can is the definition of success.
Both success and failure are entirely mental.
You don't celebrate your achievements because you always want more
The desire to bridge the gap between near-perfect and perfect is what separates extraordinary from unstoppable. Cleaners have this insatiable need to expect more from themselves than anyone else could. They are never content and are always looking for ways to improve. This prepares them for any circumstance and allows them to adjust quickly.
The most important conflicts you'll ever have are with yourself, and you must always be your hardest adversary. Always expect more from yourself than you expect from others.
